Dutch medical technology company Nicolab has officially opened its new Australian and New Zealand headquarters alongside a research and development centre in Melbourne. The expansion is supported by the Victorian Investment Fund and aims to scale the company artificial intelligence stroke technology across the Asia Pacific region. Officials announced the launch to bolster local health innovation and create high value jobs in the state capital.

The new Melbourne facility will create 20 high skilled jobs while expanding local research and development capabilities in healthcare. Nicolab chief executive officer Charlie Bell said that the technology helps clinicians evaluate patient conditions with greater speed and accuracy. Bell said that in stroke care every minute matters and that their tools help clinical teams make critical decisions in minutes rather than hours to improve patient outcomes.

Local health services have already integrated the platform into daily operations across regional areas. The Victorian Stroke Telemedicine service has used Nicolab StrokeViewer technology since 2023. Victorian Stroke Telemedicine director Chris Bladin said that the software has supported clinicians in assessing over 12,000 patients with suspected stroke across regional Victoria. Bladin said that fast access to brain imaging and artificial intelligence analysis helps specialists make time critical treatment decisions regardless of where a patient lives.

From its expanded Melbourne base, Nicolab plans to forge new partnerships with Victorian industry groups, universities, and health services. The company will continue developing advanced software applications designed to improve the efficiency of stroke triage in hospitals. State officials said that the project aligns with broader government technology strategies to drive economic growth and medical research.

The company operations will continue from the new Melbourne headquarters alongside ongoing hospital rollouts across Australia and New Zealand.
